10 Questions with Richard Kim

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hi there, I'm Richard Kim, owner and lead cinematographer at True Focus Films. My passion for filmmaking started in college while working at the campus TV studio. Learning about camera gear and other technical skills was fun, but what really got me going was the ability to convey a story" through creative editing. That's why I love wedding filmmaking so much.... every wedding is unique and has a special story about two people starting their journey together. And along the way, there are family members and friends that play key parts throughout the day. Combining all those elements into a seamless story (through video) is what drives me to create cinematic keepsakes for each and every couple.

2. How long have you been filming weddings? How many weddings have you filmed?

I filmed my very first wedding in 2006, and at that time, I was just starting up my business. I learned a lot the first few years in business, from proper lighting techniques (that won't blind guests during toasts) to how to secure a microphone safely to pickup clear audio of wedding vows (and hide the mic behind a boutonniere flower). I've filmed over 75 weddings and events to date.

3. How would you describe your videography style?

Our emphasis is on the "story" of the couple. Every couple has different struggles and achievements to get to where they are, and my goal is to use those elements to make the film feel personable and real. Many prospective clients tell us they feel like they "know" the couple in the wedding film, even though they've never met! And that's the power of creative storytelling!

4. How well in advance should couples book their wedding videographer?

Most of our wedding couples book 6-9 months prior to the wedding date. But for the peak summer/fall wedding season in Massachusetts, we recommend booking 9-12 months prior to the wedding (to ensure your date is available).

5. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?

We offer three packages based on our most frequently requested services. But we are happy to create custom packages if your needs are in-between (or beyond) the scope of these packages. For the most up-to-date info on our packages, check out our website: http://www.truefocusfilms.com/packages

6. Are you the wedding videographer who will be filming on the wedding day? How many camera people and cameras will be operating on the day?

I'm always present on the day of the wedding and I serve as lead cinematographer. There may be other cinematographers along with me depending on your package and/or scope of your wedding, but I'll always be the primary cinematographer.

7. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

Travel fees are charged for destination weddings where airfare, car rental, hotel will be needed for transportation for me and my team. For most weddings in and around the New England area, there are no additional fees for travel.

8. How do you back-up your footage to ensure no footage is lost and for how long do you keep the footage after the wedding?

Immediately after the wedding, we backup the footage and load the footage to our editing system. We will archive wedding footage (raw camera files) for up to two years after your wedding film delivery.

9. How long after the wedding will the couple receive the video? And how will the video be delivered?

In general, most of our wedding films are delivered in 2-3 months after the wedding date. We often provide sneak-peek snippets (e.g. a few minutes of the ceremony, a few minutes of toasts) for our wedding couples before the finished film is delivered. Couples are welcome to post and share the videos on their favorite social media sites.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

In the unlikely event that the wedding is cancelled or videography services are no longer needed, refunds for videography services will be granted on the following schedule; minimum six (6) months notice before wedding date, 50% refund of deposit; less than six (6) months notice before wedding date, no refund. Given the current pandemic, we are trying to be as flexible as possible with rescheduling wedding dates based on couples' needs. Always ask us if you have a specific need/question.
